How Can A Student Gain Benefit With ESA? from Manav Pietro's blog

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is a financial benefit provided by the Government to people if they are ill or disabled. One can claim ESA if he/she is unemployed, employed or self-employed. One must have a Work Capability Assessment in order to access ESA to see the extent to which one’s disability or illness affects their ability to work.

Once you get entitled to ESA, you will be then placed in one of the two following groups:

  • Work-related activity group, where there will be regular interviews for you with an adviser.

  • Support group where there will not be any interview.

There are two types of Employment and Support Allowance:

  • Income-related ESA

  • Contribution-based ESA

This Video titled as “ESA for students” explains about how a student can benefit from Employment and Support Allowance.

The residence and presence conditions which one must fulfill in order to claim an ESA for student include the following:

  • To claim Income-related ESA, a student must be present in Great Britain, be habitually resident in the United Kingdom and have the right to reside in the UK.

  • To claim Contributory ESA, a student must be present in the Great Britain.
