Description

Screen buy wow gold Play is turning off the computers and consoles and heading down to the beach for a Christmas break.

After the third very successful year of Screen Play, I'd like to take the opportunity for thanking you for your valuable contribution to the blog.

Visitor numbers have been consistently high all year, and your comments and Your Turn contributions have helped make Screen Play one of Australia's most lively, interesting and informative gaming forums.

Your passion, enthusiasm, humour, intelligence and insight makes it a pleasure to maintain the site.

Feel free to chat among yourselves during the break, although comments will not always be moderated in the usual timely manner.

Some Screen Play readers are particularly keen for others to share their online usernames to facilitate game playing during the holidays, so I encourage you to do so in the comments section below.

Screen Play will return on January 19. See you then.

It won't be a popular choice judging by its mildly disappointing sales or Screen Play voting over the last fortnight, but my favourite game of the year was LittleBigPlanet.

It's a wonderfully creative, charming, innovative, accessible and ambitious plaything that is hilarious when enjoyed with friends and also engrossing when alone.

Building your own creations can feel overwhelming, but the way Media Molecule use their imaginative levels to teach and inspire is brilliant game design. And despite the heavy handedness of Sony's online moderators, the fruit of the community's hard work is already absolutely delicious.

Disagree with my choice? That's fine: games like Fable II, Fallout 3, Braid and Grand Theft Auto IV are certainly worthy alternatives to "game of the year" status. Vote for your favourite game of 2008 in our reader poll below, and say a little prayer in hope that next year's gaming bounty will be just as tasty.

Many thanks to all Screen Play readers who have contributed Your Turn blogs during 2008.

The standard of writing has been exceptional, highlighting once again that Screen Play readers are an intelligent, thoughtful and articulate community.

Every month it's been exceedingly difficult to choose a winner of our PlayStation 3 prize.

A special thanks also to Sony Computer Entertainment Australia for supporting an initiative which allows Screen Play readers the chance to reach thousands of Australians, including many powerbrokers in the interactive industry.

As the final Your Turn entry of the year, today we have some festive fun from Steve "Smoolander" Smoothy, a 31 year old Melburnian who works for a software company. Steve thought up this amusing piece while sitting in a boring meeting in Bangkok.

12 Days of Screen Play Christmas

On the first day of Christmas,

Australians splashed out $100 million on video gaming hardware and software last week, a new high score for the industry despite the gloom over the economy.

The buying frenzy came just as the Federal Government's one off Christmas bonus to pensioners and low income families appeared in many Australian bank accounts.

Sales of all consoles have risen dramatically over the past few weeks in the lead up to Christmas, and Microsoft believes the spike will help propel the Xbox 360 beyond half a million sales since launch in March 2006. By Christmas, Microsoft also expects that Australians will have spent more on the Xbox 360 than they did on the original Xbox console.

Screen Play yesterday chatted with David McLean, Microsoft's Entertainment Division Regional Director, about the gaming market for the interview below.

The thing we wanted to announce is that by Christmas we believe we will have sold half a million Xbox 360s in Australia, making it the most popular high definition next gen platform. And I also wanted to share a broader level announcement, that according to GfK, Australians have bought over $100 million worth of gaming product last week. That's certainly the largest ever week in the Australian gaming industry. On behalf of all of us in the industry, in this time of an economic downturn for us to have the biggest week in sales across the category really talks for the strength of the category and the robustness of the video games industry even in this economic climate.

How much do you think it is due to Mr Rudd's free money?

Yeah, I think there's a part of that, certainly. Absolutely. It's interesting that people have gone to retail. It's nice to know that they've gone to retail and moved into our category with some of that (money). That's a good thing. People are saying maybe I won't buy a new car or go on that holiday so I'll invest in some video games for the family at home and buy a $299 Xbox versus a new car or a big flat screen TV. We're all benefiting from that.

Are you happy with Xbox 360 sales across the whole year despite the rampaging Wii?

Yeah, we are. My view is that I am overachieving on our local plan. The rampaging Wii I think is actually in the long term good for the whole category. Their broadening (of the market) is much to be commended and respected. It's also giving us an opportunity to enter that category to some degree with some of the new products we having coming out such as Lips, and also the work that we're doing with our partners with things like Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero World Tour. The category has been broadened and the whole industry will benefit.

On the broadening titles, what happened to Scene It and You're in the Movies for Australia this Christmas?

They'll come in the second half (of the financial year). We held back the launches to allow us to properly support these titles in what will be a less crowded market than the current pre Christmas avalanche. Expect to see them in the March/April timeframe.
