The way anxiety and panic attacks are related. from Charley Brightman's blog

Anxiety therapy have come a very long way in the last two decades. Modern-day anxiety therapy looks nothing like the painful protracted treatments of last century. Today the emphasis is on helping people become far more resilient, and giving new strategic methods how to act and think when anxiety arises.

Many people ask about anxiety treatments for anxiety. There is a good chance you may have asked a loved one, or a counselor you worked with many years ago. Today anxiety treatment is more focused and thorough. Anxiety treatments can involve many different paths. Each with their pros and cons. Today, the most common is cognitive behavioral therapy. When you are anxious, CBT looks at how you think and behave. It teaches you how to change your thinking and how to act in order to feel better.

This involves being placed in an environment where you will be exposed to a stimulus that triggers anxiety. The exposure really works to help you become less anxious. Cognitive behavior therapy also looks at how you think when you are anxious.

Another form of anxiety treatment is guided imagery. In this you are asked to imagine your fear and anxiety sensations rising until they are unbearable. From there you are instructed how to hold the image until it loses its strength and finally you are asked to think about a safe environment.

Other forms of anxiety treatment include relaxation techniques. This involves breathing exercises and mental imagery. This can help reduce anxiety and panic attacks. Mindfulness meditation is another technique that allows you to quieten your mind and still your mind. Mindfulness meditation provides both a mental and a physical practice.

Any of the above forms of anxiety treatment would be a help in the short term. Each option has its own pros and cons. One thing is clear - anxiety treatments can help you feel better while you are healthy. The question is do you need to treat yourself to feeling better? It all comes down to your definition of feeling better. If you decide you do, then find a partner to help you along the way. Otherwise, you can treat yourself by taking a self help medication, taking a nutritional supplement, or joining a support group. Whatever you decide, you will feel better and learn how to be well. Whatever you choose, the point is to feel better and look better.
